Oklahoma Athletic Trainers’ Association Inducts McGonagle into Hall of Fame; Announces Scholarship Winners

The Oklahoma Athletic Trainers’ Association held it’s annual meeting of May 10th and 11th on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The awards luncheon honored Scott McGonagle with induction into the OATA Hall of Fame. Scholarships were also awarded to Leah Saplin of Owasso High School and Megan McKinley of Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Scott McGonagle is currently the Director of Athletic Training at the University of Miami, a position that he has held since 1995. In addition to working with the Hurricanes football team, Scott also was instrumental in starting the curriculum program at the University of Miami. McGonagle’s extensive experience includes 13 years as Head Athletic Trainer at The University of Tulsa from 1982 to 1995, were he started the undergraduate athletic training curriculum program and served as curriculum director twice. He also served in all executive positions of the OATA including president. Scott began his athletic training career as a student under Dean Nesmith and Lynn Bott at the University of Kansas. He obtained his masters degree from the University of Arizona.
Leah Saplin, winner of the OATA High School Student Scholarship, is a senior student at Owasso High School was she has been an athletic training student for 4 years. She plans to attend The University of Tulsa’s Athletic Training Education Program.
Megan Mckinley, winner of the OATA College/University Scholarship, recently completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She will be finishing her Master’s Degree in Sports Management.
